Owner Wayne Parks' father, Wayman H. Parks, was a pipefitter at the Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company for close to 12 years. He worked two eight-hour shifts until the union came to the shipyard and orchestrated a large strike in 1967. The second shift was no longer available to him after that, so he took a second job working at Wilson H. Wright Plumbing and Heating Service Company in Hampton, Virginia.
In 1971, his father decided to start his own company named after his wife. It attracted attention as it was unusual in the 70's to have a woman's name as a plumbing company. Thus, Betty's Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning, and Electrical was born and became a branded name for residents of the Virginia Peninsula.
